Why is it recommended to gain real internship experience before graduation

Before graduation, you may have already made up your mind: which city to work in, what position to apply for, which company to join, and what kind of life to live in the future.

But when you actually join a company and work alongside colleagues for several months, you will likely find that the things you were once certain about keep changing one by one.

But when you actually join an enterprise and work with colleagues for several months, you will probably find that those things you were once so certain about are changing one after another.

The role you once liked may not appeal to you in practice; fields you overlooked might turn out interesting after exposure. Tasks you thought you were bad at could be well within your ability, while things that seemed easy may prove far more challenging once you get down to work.

It is a good thing for these changes to happen earlier.

That is why we recommend: if conditions permit, take an internship as early as possible. Spend a few months engaging in real work and rediscovering yourself.

I. Engage with Society First to Gradually Understand What Work is Really Like

Many students spend all their time studying and have few chances to experience corporate environments and real work. By graduation, they have acquired plenty of professional knowledge yet remain unsure about daily workflows, how to collaborate with colleagues, and how to tackle problems.

It is hard to truly grasp these things merely by listening to others.

For example, when assigned a task, you may think you fully understand the requirements. But after finishing it, you find your work fails to meet what the other party expects. When facing difficulties, you try to figure things out on your own, while your teammates are waiting for your progress. You may believe your part is done, yet when handed over to the next colleague, it turns out they cannot proceed with your work.

After going through such scenarios several times, you will gradually understand why it is vital to confirm requirements, provide timely updates, and follow up with extra questions after finishing your work.

Exposure to real-world scenarios is a critical step in professional socialization. Many insights are gradually gained through practical tasks.

Receiving an offer is certainly worth celebrating. However, the so-called "landing a job" is only a milestone choice. Changes will still lie ahead, and continuous learning, judgment and competition will be required. Hardly can a single life decision settle everything that follows.

Getting exposed to these things in advance helps you become better prepared.

II. You May Change Your Mind Several Months Into an Internship

When you first start, everything may feel fresh: the products are interesting, colleagues are professional, and you finally get a chance to show what you are capable of.

After a while, your feelings shift. There is plenty of repetitive work each day, and mistakes can happen even on simple tasks. Roles that once seemed exciting also come with lots of trivial and dull work.

Later on, you may find some tasks become easier with practice, and certain problems grow more intriguing as you dig into them. You start to take the initiative to learn and do more.

Of course, you may also become increasingly certain that this path is simply not for you.

It is completely normal for your thoughts to shift several times within just a few months. You finally gain first-hand experience to revise your original judgments.

For example, if you are drawn to R&D, you need to experience repeated testing, troubleshooting and plan revision in practice. If you enjoy interacting with people, you should see whether you can follow up patiently when requirements keep changing and progress stalls.

Experiencing these before graduation gives you the chance to think carefully and try other options. Once you are burdened with living expenses and work schedules, making the same choices will feel entirely different.

III. While You Still Have Room to Adjust, Find Out Early Whether You Are a Good Match

When choosing a job, you should not rely merely on job descriptions and impressions from interviews.

Whether colleagues are easy to work with, how supervisors assign tasks, what daily duties the role involves, and whether you can get guidance when problems arise — all of these need real-world exposure.

While you are learning about the company, the company is also learning about you. Through this experience, some gaps can be resolved via communication and learning. In other cases, both sides may realize that a different path would be a better fit.

Finding out early that it is not a good fit is often more valuable than forcing the relationship to continue.

The recent incident where Changzhou Xingyu Automotive Lighting Systems terminated employment contracts with a group of new graduates has shown many people how passive new hires can be when facing sudden job changes right after graduation. In related reports, some graduates shared that during their job hunt again, they struggled with insufficient work experience and fewer available opportunities.

Enterprises should bear their employment responsibilities. However, for students preparing to step into society, this incident illustrates a tough reality: you’ve left campus, possibly rented an apartment and moved your belongings. If the job you thought was secured suddenly falls through, everything afterward can become extremely difficult to manage.

An early internship cannot guarantee there will be no fluctuations in the future, yet it at least allows you to learn about the role, company and yourself sooner, reducing mismatches that could have been identified in advance.

A few extra months of exposure grant you more room for judgment and adjustment.

IV. You Can Only Find Your Own Career Rhythm Once You Start Practicing

Many students know they want to pursue a promising career path, yet they are unsure about how to take the next steps.

For instance, if you aim to work in R&D, what specific area of R&D appeals to you? If you want to go into product work, where should you start? If you hope to lead a project someday, what skills do you need to build right now?

Answers to these questions will gradually emerge as you engage in real work.

You may find that you enjoy digging deep to fully troubleshoot an issue. Or you may discover that rather than working alone, you excel at clarifying client requirements and coordinating teams to deliver results. Even within the same major and the same company, there can be multiple career paths suited for different people.

Your career roadmap will also become concrete: get familiar with products first, then learn testing and analysis, participate in a specific module, and gradually take charge of more complete tasks.

Knowing what to do next makes it easier to take action, rather than merely dreaming about who you want to become in a few years.

This path can be broken down into several stages and adjusted as you go. One of the values of an internship is helping you find a suitable starting point and gradually figure out your own rhythm.

V. Test What You Want and Are Able to Do in Real Work

Everyone forms certain self-assessments: I am a quick learner, I am good at communication, I have strong hands-on skills, so I should be suited for this role.

How accurate these self-assessments are will become much clearer once you work on a specific task.

Can you explain a problem clearly? Can you deliver a task as agreed? Can you improve after receiving feedback on your weaknesses? Will you stay committed after several setbacks? Such experiences carry more weight than a few lines of self-evaluation on your resume.

Internships are ideal for identifying the gaps between what you aspire to do and what you are capable of achieving.

Within a team that sincerely nurtures interns, you will receive guidance and constructive feedback. Many skills are built through mentors’ extra explanations, demonstrations and your repeated attempts.

Moreover, identifying your weaknesses before graduation brings one major advantage: there is still time to improve.

If you struggle to understand technical documents written in English, you will know where to focus your practice. If you can operate software yet fail to analyze the results, you will know which knowledge to build up. If you are unsure about your graduation project topic, exposure to real-world problems may inspire your ideas.

When introducing yourself next time, you will also gain greater confidence. You can specifically talk about what you have done, what difficulties you encountered and how you solved them. Even if you do not stay with this company in the end, these experiences will stay with you.

We advocate early internships, and companies should also commit to serious training. Work assignments, mentors, feedback mechanisms, compensation and future opportunities should all be clearly communicated. Students invest their time and deserve tangible growth.

As for when to start and how long the internship lasts, it should be determined based on coursework and graduation schedules. What matters is that during this period, you get real exposure to work, complete practical tasks, and have a chance to reflect carefully on your next steps.

An early internship sets aside time for you: to gain a clearer picture of work, to understand yourself better, and then make your post-graduation choices.
