Why Balloons Must Be Strictly Prohibited in Drone Show Areas?
In recent years, drone swarm performances have become the centerpiece of major New Year’s Eve celebrations and large-scale festivities. However, "balloon interference" incidents have become increasingly frequent, causing drones to fall in batches, resulting in significant economic losses and severe safety hazards. Unfortunately, such accidents are showing an upward trend.

I. The Fatal Destruction of the "Strong" by the "Weak"
While drones appear sturdy and balloons soft, their physical contact in a flight environment is extremely destructive:
Vulnerability of High-Speed Propellers: The core of drone flight is the high-speed rotating propellers (often reaching thousands of RPM). Once the tough skin or tether of a balloon tangles with the blades, it causes instant motor stalling or blade fracture, leading to an immediate loss of power.
Interference from Explosion Impact: The explosive airflow generated at the moment of a high-altitude collision is enough to disrupt the flight attitude of lightweight performance drones, potentially triggering chain-reaction collisions.
The "Long String" Threat: The thin, long tethers hanging below balloons are "invisible killers" for drone swarms, easily causing collateral damage across multiple units within a tight formation.
Static and Discharge: Many decorative balloons use foil materials. When a large number of foil balloons approach a drone swarm, they can alter the local electromagnetic environment or generate static discharge, interfering with the sensitive RTK high-precision positioning signals.
Vision Blind Spots: Modern drones rely heavily on vision or ultrasonic sensors for obstacle avoidance. However, the curved surfaces and material properties of balloons often cause ultrasonic waves to be absorbed or refracted, rendering avoidance systems ineffective.
II. Controlled Systems vs. Unordered States
The essence of a drone show is precise programmed control, whereas balloons represent unpredictable, random motion:
Path Conflicts: Drone swarms fly according to preset coordinates with minimal spacing. Driven by wind, balloon flight paths are completely uncontrolled. Automated drone systems cannot react like human pilots to identify and dodge random floating objects in real-time.
Risk of Uncontrolled Deviation: Stray balloons can "hook" a drone and drag it out of the designated safe flight zone, potentially causing the drone to fall into spectator areas or traffic arteries, resulting in secondary injuries.
III. From "Technical Conflict" to "Management Failure"
We must recognize that the conflict between drones and balloons is not a technical bottleneck, but a management loophole.
30% Technology, 70% Management: Most accidents are not caused by drone system failures but by the failure of ground control to prevent balloons from entering the flight corridor. Accidents often stem from a lack of awareness. During the project preparation phase, "Prohibiting Balloon Release" must be established as a prerequisite risk condition, with physical isolation measures enforced.
The Principle of Staggered Timing: A romantic "balloon rain" and a high-tech "drone show" cannot coexist in the same space. If physical exclusion is impossible, one must choose between the two, or implement a strict staggered release schedule.
The conflict between performance drones and balloons is entirely preventable. Prohibiting balloons should be the baseline requirement for every drone show.
